Challenge 3

Adapt and reformulate products for label simplification, regulation, and/or new consumer demands.

How can we identify and incorporate new ingredients and
technologies that enable reformulations toward simpler labels and
improved nutritional profiles (both for human consumption and pet
food), without compromising sensory performance, stability, total
cost, or industrial scalability?

In a broad, multi-category portfolio, we seek to strengthen the adaptability of our formulations, both for human consumption and nutrition for pets, in the face of changing regulatory requirements and consumer expectations for simpler, more widely-accepted ingredients. The focus is on incorporating scalable solutions that enable an efficient transition to formulations with better regulatory and market acceptance, while maintaining flavor, texture, stability, and cost competitiveness without compromising industrial performance.

What is expected of the solutions

We seek technological solutions and/or functional ingredients (not methodological consulting) that enable the replacement,
reduction, or reformulation of critical components (in applications for both human consumption and pet food), including
preservatives, colorants, sweeteners, emulsifiers, antioxidants, flavor enhancers, sugar, and other additives, with a focus on:

Replacement of “complex” additives
without compromising performance

  • Natural or “clean label” alternatives for preservation,
microbiological control, and/or shelf life extension.
  • Solutions to maintain product color and appearance
using ingredients that are more acceptable to
    consumers.
  • Alternatives for sweetening and sugar reduction with
    minimal sensory penalty.

Maintain texture, functionality, and stability

  • Ingredients or technologies that maintain texture, structure,
emulsion, crunchiness, creaminess, or bite, depending on the
    category.
  • Solutions that ensure stability (physical, chemical, microbiological)
    throughout the expected shelf life.

Industrial feasibility and competitive total cost

  • Reformulations compatible with existing industrial processes and
    scalability (plant/pilot).
  • Options that maintain or improve total cost (ingredient + yield +
    losses + reprocessing).
